Good afternoon,

New to the boards and have really enjoyed reading all the posts. I'm not a builder, however one day I would like to do a kit. However I do have a stock and percussion lock for what was a T/C White Mountain Carbine (54cal). The tang is a "hook " style? and remains in the stock.

What would be the best direction for me to put another barrel in this stock. I believe the T/C WMC was half octagon half round, and was only 24 inches??? It would be nice to have a half oct half round, but ultimately it does not have to be.

Thanks

Well if you want to use the current stock, you’d need the rest of the breech fitted to a barrel that is dimensionally the same as what was in there up to the end of the stock. The barrel could be whatever shape once past the stock if and only if you could make the ramrod groove or rib line up correctly.

I know guys in my shooting club who routinely buy TC “Hawken” rifles that have ruined barrels and retrofit them wit custom barrels up to 48” long.

A Green Mountain drop in replacement barrel is the easiest answer, but they have not made them for a while and used ones are getting scarce on the market as well.

Thank you for your help. I'm going to reach out to Rice and Colerain and see what they are able to do.

Have a good afternoon

Unless you find a WMC barrel you will be putting almost $300 worth of custom made barrel in a gun that might be worth less than $300 when you get done which is OK if you plan to keep the gun for life but it would be very hard to sell. Kinda' like the silk purse sows ear analogy.

You would be money ahead of you parted out your gun on eBay and bough this. You could probably get more than $100 for the stock and close to $150 for the lock
