Ready for the field
« on: November 29, 2020, 03:51:48 AM »
I have finished up this rifle as a stand in for sloppy weather during Ohio's deer gun season. I had actually rifled this barrel in 2006 and set it into a blank sometime later. It has been sitting on the back burner for such a long time (life gets in the way) that this year I decided it was now getting completed. I did the wrist inlays as a demonstration at the Log Cabin Trades Fair in October. It is a 50 caliber with a twist of 1 in 66 that slightly speeds up to 1 in 60. The rifling machine came from Dennis Priddy.

I used an original butplate on this and the cap box was an original as well. The wrist inlay and the inlays on the forstock I gleaned from pictures of old rifles, one in the last edition of the Ohio Association of Longrifle Collectors (the wrist) and the forstock inlays were from pictures my son sent me from a Gunbroker auction. The inlay on the cheek piece was from a rubbing from an old rifle that was at the Log Cabin in for repairs. This rifle is ready for the woods and at 25 yards the shots pretty much are about an inch, but it's hard to tell because the hole is so enlarged. At 50 yards I have a 2 inch group. The sights are Kiblers SMR sights I picked up at the Fall Frolic. The lock and triggers are Davis

Looks real good to me bro.
I really like the color and fittings. I built one similar for my brother Greg for last Christmas.
I like using original parts when I can get em. Have several build as such.
Sweet rifle man. keep at it. beat regards, Dave F 8) 8)

If that is your sloppy weather gun, I would can only imagine what your fair weather gun looks like.  Very well crafted.  Ornate, but not overly so.  Great job!  By the way, I think Monday & Tuesday it will get to see some service with the sloppy weather thing.

Fantastic rifle!  You wouldn't see me taking it out in bad weather.  I have a gain twist barrel and like them.

That is a fine example of a later period percussion halfstock and I wouldn’t have thought myself under armed with such a rifle in 1850 or 2020 . I admit that I strongly prefer these percussion half stocks to post rev war full stocks .Its simply my prejudice speaking .Early and late are attractive the middle got to be “too mannerist “to use an art history term
It’s a fabulous looking rifle life is to short to shoot and ugly gun even in bad weather . And as you’ll clean and oil it afterward no one will know .

Beautiful Ohio rifle. There's a lot of Swietzers living around here. It's not uncommon to still see schuetzens at every day gun shows. It looks nice, and looks like it has a lot of Swiss influences,  which it probably doesn't to  every one else.
