Need a good vise

The wood rocker faces for the Fox Shop vise look good.  I think Acer reported on his modifications to this vise a couple years back.  Based on his input I cut off the back jaw of the vise flush with the anvil, and put a pivot through it into the new surface.  So the vise adjusts automatically to anything put in it that has non parallel sides.  The rockers would still work with that setup.  The lock bolt through the back of the vise to prevent unwanted rotation is a must.  I tapped the mounting stem  so the locking bolt actually threads into the stem at the normal position parallel to the bench face and filed a few flats at the other 90 degree positions around the stem to help it hold when not in the normal position.  I have been meaning to make a couple more back jaws of laminated oak  with different shaped faces to interchange with the original cut off steel jaw.

Thanks for the advice and input. There are so many options from you guys I do not know where to start. I really like the base and the set up Beaverman has. Looks like it would fit the needs real well. I did not mention but I also make pistol grips. This would hold them nicely while checkering that requires a lot of different point of views. I also like the rig from KyFlinter. It also looks good. I guess I might as well break down and get one of each. As David said, you cannot have too many vises.


David Veith asked where I was from. I grew up in the Bayous of Mobile Alabama and have spent the rest of my almost adult life near the capitol city. The Missis and I build a place about 12 years ago I guess you would call semi country. Got a Master Traditional Bow builder next door, 40 acre lake full of bass bream and crappie and a few acres within walking distance to hunt. All the neighbors share the same interest. Guns and bows huntin and fishin. It ain’t heaven but dang near it.

I am trying to figure out how to put a pic on here of the one I am working on. As soon as I figure it out I will pop it on here for ya. Lot’s of mistakes but ask me if I am having a good time!!!

I went to the Midway Arms "scratch, dent and returns" sale this morining and picked up a returned Shop Fox vise for 20 bucks!  Whatta deal!  Now I just have to make some of those mods.......
