Initials “S T”
« on: December 23, 2020, 10:18:31 AM »
Would appreciate help identifying this gunmaker. Initials are a backward “S” and a “T”. It is a early Southern percussion rifle with a 3/4 length stock.

Thanks for any clues or educated guesses.

Seeing more than just the initials on the barrel would make it easier to weed out the likely builders.

Here are a few examples of how Samuel Todd Sherwood from Doddridge Co WV signed his rifles. I doubt this is your guy but a photo of the rifle would help.

This was my first thought seeing that marking.

Thank you. I’ll post a few photos of the rifle later today.

That was my first thought.  Maybe old Samuel was in the spirits that day.

Merry Christmas everyone. Finally got around to taking a few photos of the rifle. The rifle came out of Western North Carolina. The barrel is about 46 inches long and swamped. Looks to be a .40 caliber.

Thanks for the photos.   Definitely not a Samuel Todd Sherwood rifle.

Does that barrel have a metal or wood rib?

It has an iron under rib.
