Horn With Repairs & Strap
« on: December 27, 2020, 11:45:53 PM »
I thought this was a good design until I filed through the horn, by that time I had to much work in it to trash it. Then don't you know it I filed a very thin spot in it trying to get the shape right. The first hole got a leather patch that is stitched on the opposite side. The thin spot was a little bigger so it got a Pewter patch held by 4 nails. Both spots also have a patch on the inside. I like the way it turned out.
It is about 10 1/2" around thee outside curve and 8 1/4 tip-to-tip. The Pine butt is naturally shaped and in the 1 3/4 to 2" range, it is held in by 4 wooden pegs, the buckle is attached with 2 staples that are bent over on the inside. Right now the strap only has one hole, the new owner can punch others for adjustment, it was cut and filed from a piece of sheet. The tip has a Brass thimble on it and is held by 3 Iron pins. The strap is Deer skin, it took almost as long to get right as the horn, it has been wet, stretched, stained, waxed, rolled over a board, etc... made in two pieces and sewn with Hemp cord. Attached at the neck with a "Hangman's Knot"
 Not the best Pix.

Tim: I actually like the horn as it is now with the repairs and all. Adds a ton of character to this neat horn.
If it don't make your standards you can feel free to ship it to the 'ol "Muskrat" I will be happy to give it a new home.

Well, Tim; I agree with muskrat.  I imagine there were many horns repaired much like yours back in the day.  It does look rather old, in fact.  I've repaired a couple of horns that worked out just fine; but not anywhere near that level of craftsmanship.  Nothing wrong with that fine horn.

WOW Tim, I really like this unique version of a southern Appalachian step horn. It would really go nice with a small mountain style pouch. The repairs only add to it's desirability. You never cease to amaze us.....
Kind Regards
