Al, that PA Schimmel you built that Bob McBride now has is still a stunner.  No buttplate or embellishments, and doesn't need it. God Bless,   Marc

Dennis,  you recall correctly.  I remember Don showing me one of his Schimmels at the shop.  It had a butt carved to resemble a butt plate. A real beaut.

What your saying is you don't like shimmels, because they don't have butt plates. We've come a long ways from Monty Mandarino and John Bivins.

No plate on this one but hard as an ash rock and has never cracked, swelled or chipped. I cannot see anything done to it other than being sealed. I think with beeswax originally which I have continued to do to yearly

This rifle maker is in Bill Ivey's book circa 1830.  It has seen much use but is still sound.  It has a metal heel plate on it.

Mine has no butt plate , however there is an outline carved to suggest one, similar to some European guns .

Well if he insists on a buttplate, here is a Schimmel Deluxe I built last Fall. Used an old steel shotgun plate- modified slightly.

I like that look Tom.  Nicely executed.

I've never put butt plates on one, but see no reason not to. When I make them, I saturate the end grain with Minwax Wood Hardener. I apply it in several applications until it will take no more. It takes stain well. It seems to be very effective in preventing excess wear on the butt.

Not much wear on this one at 175 years old or so.

Bark inclusion. You ought to see the other side. The bark is actually nailed down

All those inherent defects yet the butt has held up fine.

Buttplates are highly over rated. ;D

I own a original Lehigh Rifle I bought at Bushy Run a while ago . Its  plain schimmel , late flint period , plain wood , tool marks all over it .
This rifle has a buttplate , triggerguard and 1 ramrod pipe .. and curly tail rammer jag .. cool cool !!

I call the guns with a buttplate , Schimmel Deluxe !!

Al
Hey Allen any chance in seeing a couple of picture of it? Sounds pretty cool,

It seems to me that Don Getz made one or two guns with the butts carved to simulate a buttplate.
Dennis

He did. They were featured on the Contemporary Makers Blog site. I am planning a similar build now.
