Pistol case tutorial
« on: September 01, 2009, 05:03:12 AM »
Hi Folks,
A long time a go Acer suggested that I put together a tutorial on making an 18th century pistol case.  Little did he know what I had in mind.  Anyway, it took me too long because I am sooooo damnnnnnn sloooooowwwww but it is done and in the tutorial section if anyone is interested.

Geeze, Dave, it's about time!  hahaha. Fantastic tutorial. This case looks authentic. Brilliant tutorial. This is one of those daunting tasks that is now broken down into little jobs, and suddenly becomes something that I can accomplish!

thanks so very much, Dave.

Dave, when you get a chance, please take a shot with the cover closed.... that's the only one you don't show.

Man, that is one great looking case, especially with the pistols in it. Yummy.

Great case and tutorial. Gives me an excuse to get some pistol stuff.
The finish came out real good. Really time consuming.

Thanks Acer Ed, Kid, and Acer and you are all welcome,
Acer, I posted 2 photos of the closed case in the last tutorial.  I am sorry that the tutorials are long and in 5 parts but there is no information online or in books that describe making traditional cases.  I thought that the tutorials might help fill a need and wanted to make them fairly detailed and comprehensive.   I would love to hear from folks like Gary Brumfield and others who probably know more about original cases than I do. They could tell me if I missed anything important and offer more information on historical methods.

take care,

dave

Hi Ed,
Just a quick note.  You mentioned that you had octagon-round barrels.  If you want to make them into authentic duelers I would suggest you look at guns made by Twigg or Griffen during the 1770's for ideas.  Octagon-round barrels were used on pistols that were transitioning toward true dueling pistols but were almost never used on true duelers made in the British Empire.  True dueling pistols almost always had octagon barrels because the weight helped to steady the aim.
