Naval brass pistol barrel blanks
« on: January 30, 2021, 08:30:20 PM »
Can anyone recommend a supplier for naval brass barrel blanks? I'd like to try to make a pair of 12" long pistol barrels, caliber 0.50.
would like round stock 12.5" long , 1.25 or 1.50 in diameter.  When drilling the bore,I expect there will be some run out.  Plan to correct this by turning between senters. That why the oversized diameter.

Best regards
Rolf

My source in the 1970's was to find abandoned rotting wooden sailboats around the Great Lakes that had a small inboard motor and pull out the bronze propeller shafts. The ones I recovered where 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" diameter and 4 feet or longer.  Maybe you have some "wrecks" nearby? It sure is some nice material to work with.

Interesting idea. I grew up near Chautauqua Lake in Western NY. One of the Packard brothers (Packard cars) had a house on the lake that was sold after their death. My father's friend Larry had one of the boats they owned rotting on his property and they cleaned it up one year. My Dad was a machinist so Larry gave him the propeller shaft out of it, I have a 5' piece of it.
Gives me and idea for a project!!

The late Gary Brumfield  built a brass barrelled rifle back in 1981, which he illustrates on his website
[ flintriflesmith.com ]   The barrel was made from a propeller shaft by Don Getz.
