Horn After One Marked; Wythe Co. Va.
« on: January 15, 2021, 12:31:08 AM »
This horn is modeled after a horn in a Wythe Co. Va. museum, the Last 3 Pix shows it. The name
V. Doriot and Wythe Co Va. are stamped in the butt There is also one similar and with the same markings on Pg. 350 of Dr. Hopkins' book "Bone Tipped & Banded Horns Pt I" with more information on the horn and M. Doriot, a search of the net will also add some.
This one is about 13 3/4" around the outside curve and 11 tip-to-tip. The Maple butt is held in with five wooden pegs. The tip is horn threaded 5/8-11 and screws into the collar that is attached to the horn with a staple to hold the strap in place.

Very nice, Tim.   Is the tip one piece or two?  It looks like two pieces.   Is the collar threaded all the way through?

Best,

Mark

 Mark,
The tip itself is one piece and yes the collar is threaded through and the horn is threaded then held with the staple. Based on the Pix I have it looks to be like the collar may have been threaded on the original also. For me it was just easier to work it that way.
Here is a closeup of the tip on the original.

  Thanks, Tim

 Heinz,
I did not feel right doing that or even using my own name. The two horns I have seen by him are similar in style and are stamped, this is in the "Style" of the two but I do not think it should be stamped as his work or as if he owned them.
Just in case, the stamping reads "HH BY V Doriot, Wythe CH”, the "V" is for Victor.

  Thanks, Tim

Okay, I really like the horn.  I am going into the camp of folks who say it should be stamped Tim Crosby, Lancaster, OH.  I know you are too humble for that, but it would be way cool.

Tim,
I agree with Marc, after all you did make the horn, you should have your name on it.

Hey Tim,  With all this talk about stamping this horn, you do mark your horns somehow, don't you?   My understanding has been that HCH requires a trademark and date on all horns by guild members.   I put my mark on all my horns with a date and serial number on the bottom at the base plug as small and inconspicuous as I can.   These days, I don't fill the mark.  So, you have to use magnification in a raking light to see it.

Beautiful job Tim!  I love it.

And I agree your name should be on it
