Southern Rifle ID and Information Please
« on: February 05, 2021, 02:04:40 AM »
A friend has the below rifle and has no idea where it came from or anything for that matter.  I am hoping someone can give some general or specific information concerning it's heritage or anything related.  A value would be nice also.  I took quite a few pictures, so it will take nemerous seperate posts to get them all on here.

Here is what I think I know about it.  It measures at the bore to be a .32 caliber.  The barrel measures approx. 1" across the flats but does have a slight taper to it.  The wood appears to be Maple.  All the hardware is brass that just looks dark.  The LOP is 13 1/2".

More.  The barrel is 44" long.  ATF measurements were taken at the back of the barrel, the middle and the front.  The ram rod thimbles are measured from the rear of the barrel.

Even more.  The inside of the lock has the number 7 on the plate and the sear.  There is no fly on the tumbler.

Post a picture of the rifle ,  from the butt plate to just in front of the lock plate a few inches,  both sides.
Also  the entire rifle, both sides  That way we can see the profile.   Will help a lot.  Thanks for posting.

Without some really defining features it’s very difficult to narrow down the region or maker of an unsigned later percussion rifle with brass furniture. A solid original like this is worth about what I’ll tell you in a PM.

Upside: intact
Downsides: unsigned generic late fullstock rifle of small caliber. So, you miss out on regional collectors or collectors of guns made by particular known makers. So it falls into the “very good example of a plain late percussion longrifle probably made between West Virginia and Tennessee or thereabouts.”

Take a very close look at the top barrel flat several inches behind the rear sight, to see if there is any trace of the maker's initials or name. Even if only rusted traces, if anything is there, please post a good picture of it. After seeing the profile of the rifle - the suggested more complete photos of the gun instead of its many small areas - we can get a better idea of where it might come from, and then any trace of a maker's name may really help nail it down.  Barrel length is also helpful, since some regions liked to use longer barrels than other regions. Thanks for the replies.  The barrel length is 44".  It will be awhile before I can get full length pictures.  I have looked for faint marks to indicate the builder, but did not find any - yet.  I will look again when I see the rifle again.
