My “EDC” Horn

Gents, here are a few pictures of my beat up old horn that I carry hunting and for trail walks, with my Dickert-styled riflegun. I’m partial to lobed horns, and made this one probably about 8 years ago. It’s scratched up with a map of the Battle of Kings Mountain, and the “Join or Die” snake. If I remember, it’s colored with brown Rit dye on the throat, and aqua fortis, brown wood stain, and black tempera powder on the body. Finished with a coat of Johnson’s paste wax. The plug and stopper are figured black walnut, and the plug is held in with hand cut nails.

Dave, did you do the engrailment ( is that the correct word) with a small gouge and ‘V’ chisel?

Richard, yes. First I filed a “step” in the throat where I wanted the engrailing, then cut the pattern in with a small gouge and parting tool. Then I continued filing the flats, and the rest of the elements of the spout. I should’ve taken the strap off to show the throat area more clearly.

Guys, thanks for all the kind words...almost makes me want to do a few more!  I think my next goal is to try a flat Scottish styled horn, to go with the game bag I made a year or so ago. I’ve tried the bag with several horns I have, and nothing looks quite “right”...I think a flat horn is the answer for that set.
