Stock Finish

It seems that whenever I read about finishes there is a distinction made between Permalyn Sealer and Chamber's Oil.  I thought they were the same product.  Does anyone know the difference?

Chamber's oil is some sort of linseed oil based product, whereas Permalyn is totally synthetic, as I understand it.  Two entirely different products.

Chamber's stuff also has a dye of some sort in it, which works real well over aquafortis.

Not the same at all.

While both are GREAT products,  Permalyn is definitely a poly based finish.  Hardens fast and shiny.

Chambers' is an oil based finish with a dark base.  Slow drying, wipe on wipe off every 24 hours.  Nice hand rubbed sheen.

Either are a great choice depending on your goal.

Thanks guys.  I have used some of the Permalyn on some scrap and it seems to dry faster than I like.  Is the Chamber's oil still available?  Sure wish I was going to the CLA Show.  Already been back East 3 times this year and the airline lost my wife's luggage on one trip.  Maybe next year.

You can buy Jim's oil finish on his website. Get 2 cans, you will use it on other stuff too !
