TOTW full stock flintlock Hawken kit
« on: March 05, 2021, 07:27:00 AM »
To those who have completed one of these; I have been asked to build one of these kits, and just wondered if there are any inherent snags involved in the assembly that I should take into consideration before agreeing to do it ?

My very first build was a fullstock Hawken kit (percussion) from TOTW.  Honestly, it's been a while and I don't fully remember, but I didn't hit any snags (I've since had lots of issues with other builds) and it came out quite nice I think, at least for my first build.

A friend bought one and his wood was kinda soft. If I were to buy one it would have to be with no lock inlet so you could use any lock.

Being a flinter, I doubt that you’ll have much trouble, just watch out for how TOTW gets the lock mortise laid out in relation to the breach of the barrel and any inletting that affects the trigger and side plate in relation to that lock placement.  Look these things over real well before you start doing anything, a change that you make for one thing can cause issues for other down the build.  That’s why some will knock pre carved stocks, cause not everything is done as well as we’d like. I’ve never built any of these, but have built plenty of other ones from them.  Personally I’d see about getting a stock that isnt inletted for a lock if possible.  I’m not sure if they thread the stud on the guard, but that isn’t hard to do.  Good luck on it.

My only problem occurred using a substitute tang on a precarved Hawken stock. TOTW was right it did work but required a lot more time and it threw off the location of other parts. I should have looked closer before cutting wood.

The complete story, is that the kit was purchased , and forwarded to a gunsmith for assembly and finishing. On receipt of the kit,  he decided that the job was too much for him, and so now the client is searching for someone else to do the work. I have built guns from a blank, and have assembled a few Chambers kits. I'm certainly aware that many " kits" have their own idiosyncrasies and I'm sure that this Hawken kit from TOTW is no different.  That's why I'm asking if anyone has experience in working with one

Bob,
A very close friend of mine impulse purchased a set of full stock Hawken parts from TOW and asked me to assemble it for him.  I have the butt plate, tang, trigger assembly, lock, and barrel/breech assembly inlet with no issues at all.  I think the entry pipe, ramrod pipes, toe plate, and nose cap will be easy.  The only question I have is how well the touch hole liner will line up with the powder chamber rear profile when I do the installation, but I have measured everything out and I think it will go OK as well.  I have attached a photo of an original he would like to use to finish the rifle, and the profile of the stock from TOW is looking good.  The second rifle down from the top in the first photo is the one he wanted to copy only in flint.  The second photo attached will give you an idea of the shape of the stock from TOW.  It has a TN type cheek piece that works out well with the design of the original.

Get a stock from Allen Martin or Pecatonica. Way better curl!

The lock used on the component set I am building for my friend is L&R.  The stock was cut for this lock and didn't take much time to inlet.  The wood is walnut with a bit of figure in the butt.  Hopefully, it will finish out well.
