Doesn’t look like my rifles when they are “in the rough”! Looks like it will be a pretty nice barn gun.

Neighbors had a little 22 single shot that kept in the barn for critters. It had so many fly specks on it that it appeared to be painted black. $:-\$

well i got my homemade trigger and my homemade trigger guard installed planning on making a butt plate but that is still up in the air, doing some 120 grit sanding. don't look to bad, now i'm going to weigh it and hope its gone to be around 7 pounds. i hope to post some pictures when i figure on how to do it i want to add them to the end page. wish me luck.

I’ve only seen two guns that I could honestly say were most likely built as barn guns. Ones finish I would suspect was sweat, and dirt, on the wood, and what appeared to be linseed oil put on the metal parts after they had been heated hot. The other one had barn red paint on the stock, and what appeared to be shellac over the metal and the barn paint. Both were no bigger than about 40 caliber, but only one was rifled.

i know its not done yet still a lot of wood to remove on the forearm but got the homade trigger and trigger plate installed, homade trigger guard and thimbles are in. thinking of a butt plate but that's up in the air for now. o.n ward and up

A scrapped finish would be perfect on that gun.

Using a scrapper instead of sandpaper before staining and oiling.
Almost forgot, after the stain burnish the stock with a smooth piece of antler.

Bone, or stainless steel rod, maybe drill rod etc. Glass rod maybe.
US soldiers used their ram-rods for burnishing the parts & barrels of their muskets.

I think we are talking about a scraped, not sanded prep of the stock prior to staining.

If that is the ramrod hole it looks like it was off center quite a bit. You will have to cover it with a plate.

PURD NEAR FINISHED, I GOT IT SOMEWHAT FINISHED EXCEPT I DESIDED TO PUT A BUTT PLATE ON. I MADE IT SO DON'T BE TO CRITICAL,, MADE FROM STEEL AND NOW I'M TRYING TO BROWN IT, WHEN THATS ON "WALA" ITS DONE,PLEASE PICK IT APART IF YOU MAY.

Yip, that looks like a good-looking, well made rifle! And making those parts yourself is way more than most of us do.

But WHY do you have your Grand-Dad posing with it? Will he sight it in also?
