flintlock rifle
« on: March 22, 2021, 07:40:24 PM »
Hello,

I showed my Jaeger rifle on scale to a friend and I told him that most of the Jaeger rifles have
a damast barrel. He said:"And what now?" I cracked my brains and this is the result.

Smylee, soaking a piece of cord in your browning solution, then wrapping it around the barrel, gives the impression of fine steel twist, what some call Damascus.  Someone else here on the forum did the same a few years back, but can't recall who it was.

Use that search box for "faux damascus", maybe it will come up.

Smylee, try https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=8046.0  It's a brace of pistols that Dave Person made some years ago.  He made a nice faux damascus on them.  The rest of the pistols are things of joy and beauty, someone to emulate.

Thanks Craig, I thought as much and I did something like that to a rifle stock about 40 years ago. It worked but not near as nice as this barrel.   :)

My honest opinion is, the concept is good but the pattern is not very true to a real Damascus look.  Instead of wrapping the cord tightly around the barrel leave some space between the windings and wind the cord back and forth in a criss-cross manner.  It takes a lot of practice to get it looking right.
My method was to wrap the barrel with waxed thread in a crisscross pattern and then spray it with lacquer. Then I removed the thread and submerged the barrel in a weak nitric acid for about 1 to 2 minutes. Then cold blue and then Brown.  I use to have some photos of these but I think they are long gone.
You can also wrap the barrel in lace, spray with lacquer, etch, and brown. I first did this in 1964.
