Screw Tip With Collar

 It is about 14" around the outside curve. The 2" Walnut butt is hollowed out about three-fourths its length, it is held in by 4 Iron pins. The tip is a very dense piece of Walnut, it took threads like horn, it and the collar, that is Antler are threaded 5/8-11. Color is from a couple coats of stain and Brown shoe polish.

What size(s) wood tap and die is the most common for horn work and do you have a brand you recommend?

You are really into threading here. Looks good I almost did a similar style the other day but had a design change half way through making the horn. It will be all most two weeks till I start back in the shop again

  Thanks Mark. The threaded collar and screw tip thing comes from a few horns in Dr. Hopkins' book Bone Tipped & Band Horns Pt I starting on page 238. they are thought to be Valley of Virginia horns. Now the shape of the butt is a little different but making horns with rounded butts gets a little boring.

Tim: I am in the initial process of making my first powder horn ever. I have no lathe, power sander, band or jig saw. Doing it all with a coping saw, files, rasp and a scraper. I will never grouse again about the price masters like you charge for your horns. When I get it done I will post a picture of it no matter how plain and simple it turns out. First mistake I made was if you have no power tools don't try and make the end plug out of a very hard piece of white oak. Just about got it half way done and it split along the grain when I tried to chisel a piece off the side.

I made my first powder horn the same way...all by hand...it was a real booger to do...i chose a raw American Bison horn...seams like it took ages to get the scale off...but the great fealing of accomplishment I got when it was done was well worth it...and the guys on here give great advice so keep posting and keep your ears perked for the advice...my first and second horns
