Leather hand stitching thread
« on: April 11, 2021, 01:37:43 AM »
I've decided to try and make as many of my own accoutrements as I can and have always been interested in trying some leather work . So I'm going to give a hunting pouch a whirl . What would be a good type and size of thread to use ?

If you have a Tandy store in your area, I suggest asking about classes.  Just make sure you explain what type of stuff you want to do, no need for the fancy carving etc..  Just a good basic sewing class and finishing class to get started.

Also invest in some good tools. You don’t need many to get started. An awl and an over stitch or marking wheel will really help you get going. Blunt Harness needles and a pair of dividers too, and a good sharp knife.

A lot depends on the leather thickness you are using and the spacing of the stiches. When I stich 9/10 oz. or thicker vegetable tanned leather I use 5 cord linen but for 4 to 5 oz. vegetable I use three or four cord linen. You "could" use the polycord stuff but it is not PC. Have a look at Springfield Leather for supplies.

Dan..... The very first thing you should purchase is T.C. Albert's book called "Recreating the 18th Century Hunting Pouch". This is one of the best on the market if you are making your first rifle pouch. Good luck and if you come across anything you are not sure about don't hesitate to ask questions.

Kind Regards

Thank you to everyone so far for your help . I am making the pouch that Ethan made on the NMLRA craftsman corner . So far I bought needles , stitching groover some and fieblings dye . The leather i'm using is 4/5oz veg tan I picked up from the local boot and leather shop . The owner also threw in some waxed thread , seems like it's a little to big for what I need but it is working out . I already had a four prong and a single stitching fork and the thread is tough to pull through especially when I'm back stitching at the end , had to use plier's and broke on needle eye . But all seems to being going well and my stitches are straight and look good , it's a learning experience and I'm havin fun . I'm already seeing thing's I want to try next time and yes a good book would help too . Almost forgot , I made a nice little stitching pony , man that sure seems to make it a lot easier going .
