Another Horn
« on: April 16, 2021, 03:18:30 PM »
This one is about 15" around the outside curve and 12 1/2 tip-to-tip. The butt is Cherry the finial side has a piece of Hickory threaded for a 1/2-6 tapped into it, it in turn screws into the Cherry base that is held in place by the same three Iron pins that hold the band in place. The antler tip is threaded 5/8-11 and holds the horn collar in place. Probably don't need a screw tip and butt. I will probably pin it before it goes to a new home. Cherry has Danish oil on it and the horn AF and Brown shoe polish.

Very unique looking horn Tim.  The base plug is different did you make a copy of one or is this of your own design?

It is not a copy of any one horn but is a combinations of different elements of some Va.-N.C. horns.

Neat horn Tim! Can't tell from the photos, is that horn collar threaded too or is it  just held down when you screw the tip down?

On this horn the collar is not threaded and the screw tip holds it on. In tapping if you run into a lot of pith it does not thread well, as you know so it turned out to be a slide on. As I said I am probably going to pin the tip so it won't make any difference. Here is one that is going on another horn, it is good and solid and took the threads well.

Them threads look nice and clean.  I always try to get Moose antler or caribou due to they are more solid hardly any pith.  I get my caribou from Thompson . As far as Moose goes I look on the internet lots of people selling them as dog chews.  You can stabilize antler with a vacuum chamber and cactus juice. It will still take dye if you want to age it.

What do you use for a container, one of those vacuum storage bags?  I have some pieces of elk antler I’d like to stabilize..Lot of pith in those.

I got a complete set off of Ebay for around $129 has the vacuum and chamber. (It’s a stainless pot with a heavy clear lid ). I have seen people make a simple system using mason jar and the tool to bleed your brakes with also.
