Mighty challenging. If you can angle the muzzle down on one end and the buttstock up on t’other it may work for a rifle with a buttstock not more than 4.5” deep. Of course you can’t attempt to align with the grain when doing this.

Do you mean it is 7" from the top to the toe or from the bottom to the top or 2"-3" lower, the heel.

Get or make a pattern and lay it on the plank. And make sure the grain runs through the wrist.

@smylee grouch I will do as you recommend as soon as a couple arrive.  It's hard to control these ideological horses once they get up and go.  I have an extreme sense of excitement with everything long rifle at this time.  I'll make do,  thank you.

as soon as a couple arrive.

Where did you order them and what are they? There could be other complications involved.

Your safest bet is to order your blanks from AMartin, he's a member here and puts blanks up for sale from time to time and if you PM him you can tell him what you want to build and he'll get the correct blank for you if he can.

That's where I got it from.  I called and he assured me I'm good to go.  We'll see soon enough.

This piece of wood is what I call a universal blank pattern ... laying a straight edge along the top of barrel , measuring down to the buttplate at the top (heel) is normally  between 1 and 2" ... then the height of the buttplate is whatever ..
This blank is 7" high from the heel to the toe .. should be plenty of wood for most flinters ..

I'll be listing more stock blanks before long . been sorta busy !!

cheers .. Allen

Yes, Allen.  We routinely get away with 7" width too.  I get frustrated seeing the huge blanks some wood dealers sell.   There is so much waste.  We buy wood in plank form and nest in our patterns.  Since we know the exact profile of the rifle we are making, we can put them very close.  We probably get at least 50% more stock blanks out of a board this way as compared to typical blanks from stock suppliers.

Terrific responses from you all,  my fears have subsided a bit.  They have not vanished but...  I can't wait until I say this is a great piece of wood.

In case you missed it A.Martin has more wood coming for sale.

Let's not build any statues to them just yet.  They are more experienced men for sure,  but they put their pants on just like me.  I've  seen Allen's work and it's terrific.  I have watched Jim's video's over and over.  He is an outstanding youngster.  They are master craftsmen.  Nobody I've run in to is a Saint.  Now,  let me not get into trouble with these guys Frozen.  I've talked to both men and have done business with them.  Money and goods have been exchanged,  and nobody gives money or goods away to untrustworthy folk.  Once money shows up the deal is real.  Plus I know how to get into trouble all by my lonesome.  The word legend is a fairy tale or folklore as I know it,  and awarded posthumously to folk.  Unless legends in their own time like Eisenhower or Churchill.  That is all.

It's not the size of the plank that counts, it's how you use it.

Jim Kibler, I recall watching your videos of cutting out the stock blanks, and thinking how little real waste you have.  You've got that nesting technique down pat!

Watched your business grow over the past few years, very impressive.

RedRiver II, you are on your way to a fascinating world of fun, excitement, road blocks and divots.  Enjoy them all, please.

Thank you Craig,  and you are certainly correct.  This site is a wonderful experience so far.  Kudos to Jim,  MB,  AM et. al.  As far as  open and accessible folks with great character,  I've never had this type of easy access to the top folks in the field.  I have a feeling this hobby is starting to explode with new interests.  Business should be booming I believe and I had better get my goods now!!!

I just removed the packaging and see a big knot on the toe.  I'll take pics later.  I'm not sure I'll even get the 7".  I was looking at a JP Beck and I'll need a 7 3/4".  I don't want this thread meandering off to never never land.  Pictures say a thousand words,  I'll get them up soon.  No, I haven't received any patterns yet.

I have drawn out 391+ patterns. I draw one out for every gun I have built. Unless you're using EXCACTLY the same parts the pattern calls for it isn't going to work.

Same here. Absolutely always.  Pencil and paper has saved me from all sorts of potential problems.
