At what point did the one piece nosecap fade out? Was it found only on early guns? When did soldered caps appear? Thanks for replying.

Ed, I don't have answers to your questions, but I don't think that the solid one piece nose cap, either formed from sheet, or cast, ever really faded out.

Taylor, I really like a formed cap and was curious if it was inappropriate on a later pistol. I would have used one anyway as I am often inappropriate. Thanks.

I cannot offer an opinion on the appropriateness of a formed cap Ed. But I have seen many cast in place and applied cast nose caps used on half and full stocked pistols and rifles well into the percussion era. Do you have a picture of the original your are emulating?

Taylor, It won't be a copy of any specific pistol. Plate 167 top in Thoughts on the American Flintlock Pistol is close in shape and size. I will do a brass cap rather than horn. Too bad these guns could not be photographed again properly.
It will have an octagon barrel not round like this.

If you don't like a sharp edge on the end of the nose cap, you can use a 1/8" piece of brass for the end piece and file a nice radius on it so it looks cast or formed. The solder doesn't show once it gets tarnished.
