Rich, it sounds quite do-able, especially with a hooked breech. You COULD use a more permanently mounted tang, but would have to file them to the same exact shape and size.
The first - and only - deer I took with a pistol was in panhandle Florida, a .45 cal "Kentucky Pistol" that I built from a kit. It was doe season, and the shot was at 20 yards. Never went after turkey with a pistol tho.

Oh, Pedersoli has a kit for their "Bounty" pistol, barrel is 16.375", 45 cal, and I believe 8 or 10 grooves. Built one for my son about 12 years ago.
