Brass Plate Engraving on the Cheek
« on: August 21, 2021, 03:15:53 AM »
Okay, I may be going a little crazy with it being the end of the work week..

I swear that in “Moravian Rifle Making Part 2” there was a rifle that had a brass plate on the cheek engraved with a Lion-like beast..maybe an Albrecht piece?

I loaned my copy out and am driving myself crazy trying to picture it. A friend and I were talking about it and I can’t get it off my mind.

Anyone have pictures?

Thanks!

You're thinking of the later Lehigh looking rifle that utilizes a 'moravian' cast brass box and where the cheek carving would be is a huge brass plate with engraved lion etc.  The barrel is said to be signed "J Ford" or something similar, but like I told Bob when he first sent me the photos, I think it's a worn Neihard/Neihardt signature with a bit of the breech chopped.  Overall I think it's a parts gun probably stocked up by Kuntz fairly early in his career.

I would love to see what's under that brass plate.

You are correct, at the very end of the book, page 193 - 200. "Rifle with related components and details - Private Collection."

There is a Bethlehem Star on the cheek rest in brass, and a large brass inlay engraved with a Lion very similar in style to the Lion and Lamb rifle. It has a cast brass Oerter type patch box.

I'm not sure if it would be appropriate to scan and post a picture from the book.

Thanks for the info, fellas. I thought I was going crazy haha! Like I said, I have the book, but have it loaned to a friend right now…

Maybe Bob will see this and forward me some pictures!

Thanks,
