Large Bavarian jagdtasche. This bag is based on a bag featured in a mid 18th century engraving by Ridinger.
It's an adaption that incorporates customer specifications as well as overall design proportion changes that satisfy my eye.
All metal fittings are handmade by me and the buckle is based on size and design of an original in my collection.
The bag features an internal divider, 3 interior pockets and a wide full gusset. It is approximately 14.75" wide and 11.25" tall.

James, how would THEY have accomplished the shiny surface, back in the 17 and 1800's.?
By boning the leather?

Great piece, I have always liked the shape. Your buckle work is very well done and your stitching pattern, fine work and finish is "Over The Top", A Beauty.

Hi Daryl,
They would have done just as i have and burnished the leather. I use a piece of sheepskin to burnish the flat surfaces. A boner is used on things like portmanteau handles, buckle turn edges, etc. A piece of canvas can burnish strap edges.
It has to be bark/vegetable tanned to take a burnish but if it is saturated with oils prior to burnishing the way most people seem to be bark tanning these days you can't get a burnish.

I also appreciate your showing the original artwork on which the bag is based. There is a lot to see in that image. That is one well-trained horse...

I've seen quite few images of that period of folks using stalking horses. I guess its kind of like a war horse....many didn't make the cut.

That is gorgeous James. The Sophia Loren of leather bags. I made a version from that engraving a few years back, and mine was nowhere near the beauty of this one. A lot went into that fine work. I love the looped fancy stitch on the strap above the ring. God Bless, Marc

That is a beautiful bag. In the illustration, the hunter is using a fowler, and it appears he is shooting ducks. I can see the need for a large bag like that for a fowler. Do you have any illustrations of what a German's rifleman bag would look like? Would it be smaller, or are all German Hunting bags large?

Thank you! In my opinion and also based on other period paintings such a large bag was not really needed for a fowling piece. The Germanic bags do tend to be larger, even some of the belt bags are that way. I remember one of my mentors saying they were for incompetent hunters to have room for sandwiches : )
Since this bag has no provision for smaller game on the exterior, I would say it could have been used for rifled or smooth guns.

Thank you James. I suppose if one were to make a bag with somewhat smaller dimensions, but kept the general shape it would still look Germanic.
