Hunting/possibles bag question

I have a Kibler SMR and a southern banded horn, that I will be squirrel hunting with and I need a bag and strap for them. Were there styles or schools of bags that would’ve been more predominant in the south that would match the rifle and horn I have? I have seen some bags that have the powder horn attached. What are the advantages/disadvantages to having the horn attached to the bag? Would you mind giving me some recommendations on who to go to for such a bag and leather powder horn strap? I’m currently looking at the Leatherman bags but, I’m open to suggestions and recommendations. Thanks so much in advance for y’all’s input!

I would highly suggest getting the reprint of Jim Webb's book on hunting pouches and powder horns.  Jim has owned over 200 original bags over time, so he knows of what he speaks.  Great reference.  It'll keep you from buying something and regretting it later.   

For a horn take a look at Tim Crosby's or Ron Hess' southern banded horns.  I think both have some for sale currently.  Tim is moderator for these forums, and Ron goes by G_A_Turner.  You'll not regret buying from either maker. 

I prefer a horn on a separate strap for versatility, but that is only preference.  Either way works fine. 

Again, haste makes waste.  Take your time and research before buying.

I just noticed a few posts down that Tim just made a beautiful banded horn.  It's a looker, and would suit your Whitson rifle's mountain place of origin well.  God Bless,   Marc

I have experimented extensively with an attached horn and for the life of me the only advantage I can find is there’s only one strap to put on the hook when you put it up. There are many disadvantages, most importantly, that horn strap does not slide across your shoulder when you raise it to fill your measure. As far as bags go, think a well used unpretentious homespun, bottom shelf, or repurposed. Even when in its first season of life it would have shown wear from the many days spent hanging on a fence post, in the barn, or laying in the floor of the wagon. A southern boy did like gussied up horns and whittled on measures though….

I like wearing my horn and pouch on opposite sides... horn on my right... pouch on my left. I find it easier to get into the pouch that way.

Madison Grant's book on pouches has a couple of pages that he specifies as southern pouches. Other than they are more of a homemade/homespun style, I don't know if there's really much of a difference. I think his theory is that professional made gear was more likely used in more settled parts of the country, like PA... and that people of poorer means from the rural south made their own gear which could vary widely in terms of skill.
