Mapp Gas

Always just used propane torch in my shop, which is a room in my house, never noticed any issues with breathing ,
Bought a mapp gas set up, from small local hardware store, the friendly sales guy says never use indoors, the gas will kill you, after reading the warning on the canister which says same thing,,but then so does the propane canister, so does anyone use it inside?

Would be pretty darn hard to only use it outside. I try to use a well ventilated area for jobs like that anyway. So yes I use mine indoors all the time.

I used one once in a while INSIDE my shop and no noticed ill effects and those little torches are
a good way to get a small area really hot in a hurry,

I think they are being overly cautious with regard to CO.   In an enclosed space,  it could be dangerous, but probably not in normal use in a large room.   I use a Propane/oxy torch, a propane and a MAPP torch in my shop with no problem.   They do not generate a significant amount of CO relative the air volume in the shop.   I also have an exhaust fan where I use them and I have a CO detector.   The detector has never gone off.   I would not, however, operate my propane forge or propane melter inside my shop.   They use a LOT more propane and have a lot more exhaust fumes(CO).

       I stopped using propane long ago and only use Mapp for soldering etc.  I use it in my shop all the time, and have never had any ill effects.  I am 78 and build full time and thankfully am not afflicted with any significant health issues.  As others have said with adequate air circulation there should be no reasonable concern.

Since 1965 my heat source for spings,sears,"flys" and tumblers and frizzens has been and still is whatever is in a Presto-Lite "B
cylinder.The torch is an air breather,no additional oxygen and I think the gas IS acetylene.At 85 I have no health issues that I am aware of and blame that on genes from my mother's side of the family and no killing habits like alcohol,tobacco or anything else.I am NOT worried about my "B" cylinder doing me in.I am now more concerned with the deep decline in food served in franchised eateries.The last two we got meals from will have to improve to reach the substandard level and they were sea food shops.Carp and mud eel I suppose .

One more thing. I temper using the "color" method and always have and made a "false muzzle" for the Bernz-O-Matic torch that focuses a pin point flame where needed and so far no reported failures of springs or anything else for over 50 years.

Mapp is much hotter than Propane and once I started using Mapp I very seldom use Propane now. I use it in the shop all the time, my shop is 30'x40' with heat and air. I have never noticed any problems with using it.

it's called product liability. Makers get sued every day so they put every warning on their labels as they can. Just use it in a well ventilated area.

Always wear a mask along with hand, eye, body, and hearing protection... with a picture of a guy in basically a haz-mat suit with a face shield.

Setting the house on fire is always more of a concern than suffocating.

A Mapp gas nozzle on a propane tank is a way to improve the temperature of propane. Found this back in the late 70's and still only use
the Mapp nozzle nozzle on propane tanks for all my soldering, high temp and low.

I’ve heard a few fellers with some obvious ill effects claim ‘no ill effects’ from this or that, but yea, I use Mapp inside and also sport a decent sized pile of interesting assorted side effects from this and that, so who knows, maybe it was jarred baby food that jacked me up and the Mapp added a few years back on….

Well if you think about it- it is much hotter than propane so it will heat up whatever much faster. Thats less combustion so less CO

Calling BS on using Mapp gas inside as dangerous.  Used it indoors for over twenty years,  it's just hotter than propane and handles silver solder that much better.

Check and see what your plumber is using the next time he/she is out for repairs. You won't be surprised.

 I am surprised that no one has mentioned that real Mapp gas hasn't been produced since 2008. The yellow bottles sold at various stores have a "Mapp substitute" usually called Mapp Pro, that for about three times the cost will give you a 130 degrees F. hotter flame. Propane burns at 3600 F and Mapp Pro burns at 3730 F in air. Real Mapp gas burned quite a bit hotter.
