Paper cartridges for sheet shooting ??
« on: March 13, 2022, 06:13:41 AM »
I want to try hitting some clays with my Tulle.  Just wondering about speeding up the loading process….Anyone ever try the paper cartridges…or it’s impossible…and thanks

Yes.
Both pre-made and filled, and formed at the muzzle.
Many topics/posts here about it, and on that other traditional muzzleloader forum.
Not sure if I ever moved my shotcup making photo essay/tutorial here. But others have posted with pics on making then too.

When I sit around shooting the sheet with my friends, I don't use any cartridges at all.

Then y'all need to have more lively discussions.  :D

You could always make up some of these, although I don't quite know how.

Maybe, but the wire might be too wide a strip.
The explanation at the bottom of my upper post, is for these same wire baskets used in muzzleloaders. The continuation of the text, told of a market hunter named "Old Man Thomas"
who had a SxS 12 bore 'market gun' with 48" tubes who was well known for his "trade", around St. Louis.  An English hunter had just gotten off the boat and Thomas chided him about his "Little Pistol", a 14 bore SxS with 26" tubes. Long story short., a contest was set up and the target was a 4" x 7" card at 70 or 75 yards.
Thomas shot and put 4 holes in his card. The Englishman with his Ely Ctg.s used the "green" paper one, and put 28 holes in his card. Impressive.

Both of these guns were cylinder bored - no chokes.
Some guys have noted that their paper ctgs. went through the 25 yard paper as if they were slugs. That is what the Green Eley ctg. did at the same range, indeed, all the way past
50 yards, as the notes say, opening up and spreading the shot at longer ranges. That is why Ely had different coloured paper on their ctgs. - for effectiveness at differing ranges.

"Old Man Thomas" was reported to have said: "Well do tell, you've beaten me fair and square(with your little pistol)". The Englishman did not take Thomas' gun as prize as previously agreed to & thanked him for the contest.IIRC
