Chambers PA Fowler Build - progress update
« on: December 23, 2021, 05:44:40 PM »
All of the hardware is on now. I think I'm ready to shape the stock and do some carving. I've done some research and based on Tom Grinslade's book "Flintlock Fowlers the first guns made in America" these didn't have a lot of fancy carving but the "British Style" fowlers made in PA and other Colonies of the era did have shell and leaf patterns at the barrel tang and trigger guard and rear ramrod pipe and beaver tails behind the lock and side plates. I also see a lot of thumb pieces.

I'm looking forward to learning how to shape the stock and do some carving under the expert guidance of my good friend and teacher Jeff Talbert at his shop. I can't thank Jeff enough for all he has taught me this year.

A sketch of the Shell pattern I think is appropriate:

Jack, that looks like some really good progress.
I think you give me too much credit.  You’ve done the bulk of the work on your own.
We can get together and start on some shaping and carving sometime soon.
