Jaeger peep
« on: December 21, 2021, 02:32:12 AM »
As often noted on this forum peeps are inordinately kind to older eyes and thought I'd share this. Now that the sights are done rust bluing the barrel and carving are all that's left to finish the rifle.

By soldering the base to the tang it could be removed down the road if some other type of sight was wanted.

Very nice!  If a guy were to dovetail the base you could have both windage and elevation adjustments.  I will keep your idea in  mind.

Very good idea, and excellent execution. David Rase's suggestion is also a good idea. I am building a jaeger with a 25-inch barrel and peeps like those would give me a 24-inch sight radius.
What is the diameter of the hole?
Thanks for posting.

Dave, what you're seeing is version three. The base originally had a .050" deep dovetail on the bottom and was to be installed adjacent the lock on the barrel. Then I was going to dovetail the base into the tang. What you see is the last version without windage as you noted. I am going to make another upper part with a horizontal dovetail containing the aperture that can be used for windage adjustment as the wonderful German peeps used.

The aperture is .067" diameter and its center is .425" above the upper tang surface.

Dennis, I believe that the sliding dovetail for windage is akin to gilding the lily.

Very nice indeed. What do you use to lock the windage position? I think if the barrel is not way out of whack windage corrections could be made with the front sight.

Beautiful!!  A small set screw could lock the sliding windage adjustment.

Drifting the front sight? What fun would that have been. The windage slide, like the original German sights I've had experience with, fits tightly and must be drifted with a punch to move.

For anyone that wants to make one of these I'd be glad to share the dimensions and way that it was done.

A lot of Jaeger rifles had a square hole in the tang. That is to stick in a diopter (peep) sight. This sight was generally used for target shooting, but using a larger diopter hole could have been used for hunting or further shots from an elevated position, too.

This is an interesting concept,too:
