Set triggers
« on: January 03, 2022, 03:01:05 AM »
Gentlemen
Sometime ago I posted pictures and comments on a Martin Sheetz gun.  I am in the process of recreating that gun.  This gun has set triggers.  I would like to put similar triggers in this gun but  I know nothing about set triggers.
This gun was built between 1790 and 1808 in Nothern Virginia, what today is West Virginia.  For obvious reasons I hesitate to remove the trigger guard and trigger assembly.  I appreciate any guidance you can provide.

Buy some Davis triggers and use the plate and springs and make new triggers. You can use the triggers that come with it to use for patterns. You change the lower portion to look like the Sheetz triggers. Use 1075 or 1084 so they can be hardened or you can case harden mild steel. If the triggers have the stud with a screw through it to adjust the front trigger you can modify the Davis plate for that with a little work.

Here is a Davis set trigger that I made new triggers and main spring for.

Very nice! Wonder why you even bothered to buy the Davies in the first place.

Speaking from experience, the trigger bar is not easy to make without a milling machine.
The triggers can be made with a good hacksaw and files. The idea of that is tiring to me.

This is a set I made as Brian described.
Davis plate and main spring, 1075 triggers and I made the set screw from an old nail

This is what needs to be known about set triggers. This applies to any set trigger but the cam-over designs.

I decided to pull the trigger anyway.  No problem.  This plate is 43/4 inches long.  I would like to come up with a trigger pretty close to this.  I have done a little metal work but I don't have a mill available.  There is no adjusting screw in this trigger.  Is Davis the only maker of set triggers?  I amm having a lot of fun building my first scratch gun.  I even enjoy inletting the barrel and rr grove by hand and the end of the rr hole has not appeared yet.  Thanks to all of you for your guidance.

H ere is a set of Sheetz triggers I made from a Davis set.  Annealed the front and rear triggers. Cut off the trigger shoes.  Brazed on new trigger shoes and reshaped to Sheetz configuration.  Also added the Sheetz style front set trigger sear engagement screw.

I have made them for years on an on and off basis with no castings, poorly fit pins or wire springs.
This forum is the only place I advertise them.I make none that must be ser to be used.I think that
is one half of an idea but also realize the two lever types when made by hacksaw and file are very
labor intensive.Lately I have made only a Hawken trigger and have been bothered by spasms in the
lower back. When I get any more ready I will post them here,

I bought a pair of your Hawken triggers from a guy that sells, or did, ML stuff at the  Bozeman gunshow. Forget the price he asked. But I gave him the money and went way REALLY happy. They are from the 1970s and I think I got them for less than what you charged at the time. I think I gave $50 for the pair.  Have project for one of them now.
Just need the wood for half stock and make some hardware.

I love looking at the original triggers. Interesting design on those. It appears the trigger plate is only 1/8” thick except where it extends for the triggers and pins. I start off with a 1/4 thick for my trigger plates and then forge a taper on the front and rear.
