Excellent Video (I think)

Yes I do agree but I removed the link. This video is under copyright and is still being offered for sale by Colonial Williamsburg. Sorry but I can not be a part of the copyright violation by having it available here on ALR.

I understand, there is a lot of confusion and mis-information about copyrights.

Here is some info that may help others:

How do so many YouTube channels get away with monetizing videos that break copyright laws?
from here: https://www.quora.com/How-do-so-many-YouTube-channels-get-away-with-monetizing-videos-that-break-copyright-laws

There are a LOT of presumptions in this question.

First, most YouTubers don’t make “plenty of money” on ad revenue unless they have a significant number of subscribers and views.

Secondly, “clearly owned” is fine if they have permission, such as through licensing arrangements. In the case of the specific channel you mention, they do have 1.8 million subscribers, BUT they obviously have licensing arrangements (in coordination with their companion website) with the movie production companies to distribute their trailers. As long as their use of the content is licensed, there is no copyright violation.

Copyright doesn’t mean that nobody can copy or distribute it; it means that the copyright owner gets to decide where and how their content gets distributed. When a copyright owner licenses specific people or organizations to use their content under specific terms, that’s exactly how it’s supposed to work, because it keeps them in control of how their creative work gets distributed (and typically they will get revenue - in the form of either a license subscription or royalty payment - from that licensed use).

Further, when you see ads on YouTube videos, frequently it means the copyright owner has chosen to monetize the content (i.e., the owner of the copyrighted content is profiting from it, NOT the YouTube channel owner).* If a YouTube channel owner chooses to monetize their videos, they can only do so when it’s their own content; as soon as any content is flagged as a match under YouTube’s ContentID system, that option is removed and the verified rights owner can choose to implement any one of several remedies, which can include having the video taken down, stripping it of the infringing content, or monetizing it. Many choose the latter because it’s economically advantageous for them to do so (it’s far easier and less expensive to allow the infringement and collect revenue on it than to sue the infringer in court). A significant number of the examples you’re likely seeing are examples where they’re doing just that.

Lastly, the primary purpose of a film trailer is to promote a movie. Why on earth would a movie studio object to their trailer being shared, uploaded, and distributed as much and as often as possible (or worse, try to stop that)? After all, the more widely it’s shared, the more people view the movie, and so the more money they make! And with a site like this one that aggregates and distributes movie trailers, now they even make money off of the trailers, too!

* I wish YouTube would explain this or make it clearer, because it causes a lot of confusion!

I made the same error by posting it a few weeks ago. It’s worth the lookup and a watch. Wallace makes it look easy!

My question would be this, not being a lawyer. If the video, any video, is put on public view, in the public domain so to speak for long periods by someone other than the copyright holder and the copyright holder allows this to happen with no comment or attempt to stop it does the copyright then become unenforceable? Not a lawyer. Just asking.

I remember I first saw that at Friendship ,Indiana at a National shoot in 1970.  They ran it for evening entertainment in the range office/cafeteria.   Everyone was paying close attention.  I think that video started a movement to hand tools in rifle building.
kind regards, heinz

I have been to Williamsburg MANY times when I lived in NJ. I always found it to be very interesting and a great visiting area - always a lot to see around there. I have purchased the VHS tape from them on one of my visits and when the DVD came out, I ordered one well worth the price and much better than watching it on a computer monitor off of YouTube.

This is the central issue.  I've watched the YouTube version of this and it is clearly poorer quality and is tacky enough to suggest something flaky.  If Williamsburg wanted this on the web, I'd bet the quality would be far better.  So I ordered the video.  As with most of the gunmaking videos out there, it is entertainment in and of itself.  Several of us have pointed that out over time in other posts.

Whether making gunleather for the cowboys or making Fess Parkers  Davy Crockett Hunting bag, I could never bring myself to duplicate the item exactly because it belonged to the craftsman.  I judge the same with this video.  Thanks, Tim C. for putting the site in this thread

I've bought that movie on VHS and DVD.  Colonial Williamsburg is suffering from reduced visitation, and I don't want them to suffer on my account.  It is a fun and informative movie from a different place and time.   :-)   God Bless,   Marc

What strikes me is how incredibly fast Wallace works in this video. His hand speed is amazing! Reminds me of the construction workers I knew during this same time period before power nailers and screw guns. They could start a nail with one hammer swing and set it to full depth with another, tap boom tap boom done.
