Pet Loads for a Getz 50 Cal.
« on: February 23, 2022, 09:54:20 PM »
Have a gun in the works using an older Getz B weight 44 inch barrel, with round-groove rifling.   Have never owned a Getz.  But have heard good things about the older ones.   Anyone have a pet load or two for their Getz 50 that they like?

Thanks

Once smoothed out, that will be a nice looking and working crown.
My .50 likes 85gr. 2F GOEX with a .021" denim patch and .495" round ball. With those wide lands, you might want to use a .490" ball and the same 10 ounce denim
that I measure compressed hard, at .021".

My Getz 50 likes 80 grains of 3f with a .490 RB , .018 pillow ticking lubed with mink oil. Barrel has flat bottom rifling. This is very accurate load

My 50 caliber Getz has round bottom rifling with a 1/66 twist.  It is octagon to round, swamped.  Its about 45 years old and has thousands of rounds through it.  Most accurate load from a consistency standpoint is 75 grains of 2f, .495 ball, with a .018 patch and mostly use Hoppes #9Plus for range shooting.  I use 90 to 110 grains of 2F for hunting depending on size of game sought.  I found that the 75 grain load gave the best consistency in velocity, shot to shot with the smallest deviation.  The barrel was accurate with loads ranging from 65 grains to 110 grains of 2 F but consistency began to spread either side of 75 grains.  Shooting more than 110 grains did not produce significant improvement in velocity.  Took a nice whitetail and a couple of hogs with it recently.

I recall back when I owned the A. Verner rifle Taylor built, having he 48" Getz .50 bl. with round bottomed rifling, I used a .495" ball and the same 10 ounce Denim .021" that I am using my current Beck rifle with a Rice .50 "Gun Maker's Barrel" with square rifling, noted above. rifling twist is in the 60 to 66" I suppose. Really doesn't matter, as it shoots well with that powder charge, so that's what I use in it.

I used an at least 38 year old 50 caliber Getz straight taper 42" barrel with radius grooves to build my Derringer Rifle.  It is very happy with 75 grains of 3fg GOEX to push a 0.495" ball wrapped on 0.018" drill cloth dampened with a mix of water soluble oil and water.  I don't think the OP has much to be concerned about his barrel.
