What would you do with this barrel?
« on: January 24, 2022, 06:04:33 AM »
I own a 36" colerain 20 gauge barrel, turkey choked, 1" across the flats and I would like some suggestions on what to do with it. I plan on sending it to Bob Hoyt to have it re-profiled, not sure to what though, but would prefer to keep it smooth. It is not going to work for my original English half stock idea. I have a friend who is really into Ohio guns and he suggested I mate it with a back action percussion lock and build a fantasy Ohio half stock out of it, a "it could have existed back then" bird blaster. While this idea is becoming more and more attractive to me everyday, I wanted to see what you guys would use this barrel for before moving forward on it. Thank you and any and all suggestions are welcome.

If it was mine I’d sell it. It’s not working out like you planned. I would not go to the trouble of trying to figure out a build then build it for a gun you don’t know you want or need. Shipping 2 ways and profiling will make it a very expensive barrel in total.
Just my thoughts. If you think you’d have fun building an Ohio halfstock with it go for it.

Put it in a corner and work on other projects. When the right idea comes to you go for it.

If you think you’d have fun building an Ohio halfstock with it go for it.

I had originally bought it with that intention, but my instructor told me it was inappropriate for an Ohio unless I wanted to go the fantasy route with it. So I considered using it on an English, but then the members here told me it would not pair with the English lock I already own. I'm just seeing what's out there as far as options and what other people think it would be good for. I'm not too concerned about the added cost of sending it out to Bob, I'd rather spend the extra money sending it out to him than lose any sleep wishing I had. It's not necessary to me but it is an option if need be.

Scott, yes, this barrel is many projects down the road. I'm just trying to get some ideas so I can start planning for whatever it is I do with it. Looking out for deals on parts to go with it, researching, books, its trip out to Bob, acquiring a tracing, selecting a blank. Just putting the preliminary pieces together.

Well just for ideas and no consideration to time or money, here's one.  Have it profiled Oct/Round with a slight swamp, make a gun with the idea it's an old Rev era musket, Bess or fowler that's had the barrel chopped down to shorter length.  Age it and beat the $#@* out of the finish, then go kill turkeys.   ;D

Leave it alone.  Order a Pecatonica Rigby kit, sans barrel and build it as an English gun as you originally wanted.  Their stock is inlet for a 1" barrel and the kit will include almost everything you need.  If you have your own wood, they will carve it.  Don't have them do any lock or other inletting.

Don, hang on to it. As your knowledge and skill sets improve the light bulb will go off and you'll cl aim: "Eureka! This is what I can do!"

And no, it's not a tomato stake.

I like Ospey's line of thinking

Dave Rase wants the barrel so I'm letting it go to him, he had to twist my arm though because I love tomatoes...

So I'm not really sure where this thread goes? I don't think Dave needs it as he sounded pretty confident with his plans for the barrel, I don't need it because I figured out what to do with the barrel, and it is not my place to delete this thread since others have contributed to it...so I guess it's up to moderators now to decide this thread's fate?

Sounds chunkie, perhaps turn it half octagon with a taper on the front half?

Dave says he plans on reworking it to a NW trade gun profile for a beech stock. It sounds like a cool idea.

No worries. Threads go this way and that, sometimes ending in unexpected places, just like life.
