i guess i got a way to go and a lot of cleanup. have a hard time moving around sitting in this darn chair but i did my best.

Looks good to me as well. Not all of us are master carvers but guess what, I’m pretty sure some of our great carvers on here like Taylor, Mike, Smartdog, Ed and many others I failed to mention, are far better than many of the early colonial gunsmiths. We get spoiled on here because we have the privilege of seeing works of the best of the best! That said yours looks like it flows well. Hugh Toenjes once said in a carving class, “Say no to elbows!” What he meant was to make sure your curves in each element of your carving a smooth arcs and don’t have a protrusion like an elbow. I’m by no way a good carver but have listened and learned from some of the best. Good luck and by the way, what are you using for the incised lines? Keep up the good work.

Yip, that carving looks very good. I like the flow you've created.
But if I may, I would do something with the lower portion of your cheek piece. Below the cheek piece, on your example, there is a continuous curve from the cheek piece moulding all the way down to the lower edge of the buttstock. I would like to see a definitive line going fore and aft interrupting the curve, which reminds me of the slack sanded production rifles one sees on the market. I see a pencil line joining the carving behind and in front of the cheek piece, but the line of which I speak should be well above that incised line.

About 1/4" to 3/8" below the cheek piece, draw a line that is roughly parallel to the lower edge of the cheek piece but diverges just a bit at the aft end. Cut this line in with a striking knife, or chisels, and remove the wood beneath the line to create a plain from the toe to the wrist. I will see if I can find an image to illustrate this...

Getting the wood from the toe to the cock panel on an even plain is not easy. Use a straight edge often to see where you are too high. Scrapers are useful in that area to remove a little wood at a time until its right. And be careful not to swamp it in there - just flat without a hump.

Yip, it really does look nice.

A "whole lot of clean up" is what I am faced with when I clean up after my new pup - a 5 1/2 mo old Standard Poodle (red) who was in a kennel before I got him. And too darn much snow on the ground outside to let him out very often.

At least your clean up doesn't have a terrible odor to it! I do put puppy pads down, and he is gradually getting used to using them. I think he needs to adjust his sights a wee bit.

Red Baron will eventually be my new Service Dog, letting Sunny relax in comfort.
