hand forged pipe axe

I forged this from a gun barrel, and forge welded a section of file for the cutting edge. Haft of curly ash and plug and mouthpiece of deer antler.

Dan, I like it. I've got a pipe hawk with a Reeves Gohring brass head and a curly ash handle. It'sthe curly ash handle that caught my eye, the color is very similar to the one I made.

Beautiful work.   When you say you used a gun barrel, was it the usual 12-L14 material common to our hobby ?   I have a section I'd like to use for a hatchet, but wasn't sure if it is suitable.

I used a piece that was 1018 I think, but 12L14 will work just fine. Jud Brennen uses 12L for forged items also. I forge weld a wedge of file steel for the cutting edge. The hard work is all done with a hand file!!

That is a beaut Dan.  What did you finish the metal with to get that case hardened look?   I like it.

Thank you for the response.  I've made a couple of these before, but never from a gun barrel.
I have fire blued them, which I assume is what we see here. :)

I started with a 6" piece of gun barrel. I fullered the neck of the bowl first with a special tool (link) I then flatten the barrel forward of the neck, hot cut the eye, and use a drift to forge to shape. Then slit the barrel for the section of tool steel for the cutting bit. Then forge weld in the tool steel (I use a piece of file that is forged to a wedge shape). Once that is done, draw out the blade to shape and contour.  Once all filed and polished, I fire blue by placing a piece of 1/8 inch thick brass sheet on the gas stove, put the hawk on the brass, and cover it with a pot. Keep an eye on it, and when it is blued, turn off the stove and let the piece cool. Thats all there is to it!
