Started Years Ago And Never Finished
« on: February 08, 2022, 05:17:10 PM »
I am assuming this was a kit gun from Golden Age Arms, as the Douglas barrel is marked GAA. I have a very old catalog from them but it's from before this rifles time.
I cannot find an exact match for the side plate. The Beck version from Track is close as I can find.

I think this could be a decent rifle completed, and that is what I aim to do. I need to hunt down trigger guard, side plate etc....
It didn't come with a lock, but my large Siler fits it perfectly. The Muzzle has been sawn off to 39" and needs smoothed up, but the bore is perfect.

Is the blackening around the carving used for carving?

The Golden Age Armes barrels by Douglas were 7 groove and 48” twist at one time. I still have a 36 cal from one of my early builds in the shop, The stock went to the wood stove about 40 odd years ago. They were advertised as “soft iron” or some such IIRC. Would have to dig into an old MB. Mag to find an old ad to know for sure.

You can make your own custom side plate from the brass plates that Track of the Wolf sells.  They are of varying thicknesses.  Here's the link;  https://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/716/1/SHEET

Also consider chewing with Muzzleloader Builders Supply. I'll bet they can fix you up for parts if you send them a picture of the inlets. Ryan and Terry Jo are great people and very helpful. Decent prices and quick shipping too. I'm a very satisfied customer.

Mule, it looks like someone was trying out using Iron Nitrate.  It collects in the curl, and when dry, it is heated to bring out the contrast that the curl has.  Normally a darker brown than what is shown.

Ironically, I was bidding on this same rifle.  Without better pictures of the lock, I stopped.  Looks pretty nice.  I wish you the best finishing it up.

There was no pictures of the lock, as one didn't come with it.

Its on the build rack awaiting attention, and will get to it after I finish current build
