Design for pistol tang carving. Does this look right?
« on: October 10, 2009, 06:25:08 PM »
I took one of the designs Dave B drew for me on my last post and tried to redraw it to fit the space available on my pistol.

I think nr4 this the best version, but I'm not to happy with the final. It looks abit heavy at the base. This migth be because I have a big leaf at the base. On Dave's orginal drawing there where 2 small leaves at the base. I tried to draw the design with two leaves, but it allway's ended up looking strange. coudn't get the leaves rigth. Any suggestions for changes?

Best regards

It's been my experience that what looks good drawn flat doesn't always look good when drawn on the gun.You have the basic design which I think is very good. But I don't  think you can really refine it until you draw it on the actual pistol.I think you will find that it looks different once it is no longer flat.Just my 2 cents!!

I'm with Tallbear, draw it on the gun.  Pencil is easy erased.

One suggestion, I think the tips of the inside arc of the carving (around the end of the tang) should extend a little past the step on the tang. You might have to widen the "waist" along-side the tang a little to do that.

It's looking very good.  Draw it on and leave it over night.  Like they say, if she still looks good in the morning, she's a keeper, start carving!

Rolf,
To ease the heaviness at the base of the leaf, continue the line of the leaf down through the three little cut marks, then at the end of that extended line, put three more tiny tiny cut marks. Aim the end of the line toward the V of the center of the two main scrools. Similar to the way the line is drawn in drawing 3.
