tROUBLE with sights
« on: March 12, 2022, 01:13:45 AM »
asking for help, a buddy of mine got a Chambers long rifle kit he built a few years ago, terrible is to hit center at 25yd off a bench, the rifle shoots about 1"1/2 right, the rear sight is  all the way to left and the front sight is all the way to right and it still shoots a little right, the sights the way they are bothers him and it looks werid. is there a way  to bend that barrel or are we missing something. hes been shooting for years and knows that to expect

Have you tried setting sights back to center and then use a different load?
Might give you a different POI/POA

Barrels are routinely straightened.  I would call the barrel maker and see if he can help.  He is probably equipped to straighten the barrel,

For me, it will probably involve a laser bore sighter, some V-blocks, a dial indicator and a long lever.  I'd set it up on the milling machine table.  The danger would be putting a dent in the bore.  It will want to bend at the waist where it is thin.

I would never use strong arm uncontrolled methods to bend a barrel.   I guess I am chicken.  Some suggest it.

In the meantime you could put it on a granite countertop. For a swamped barrel, Measure one side vs the other with a dial indicator.  Put it back on the same spot on the granite. measure at the same spot.   It should be obvious if the whole barrel is bent.  A straight sided barrel will show a gap between it and the granite on one side vs the other.  A dark room and flashlight behind the barrel will make it easy to see.  If the outside is straight and the bore is crooked it will not show.

I have a 36 like this, actually 2 of them.  The barrel is bent or bore has run out.  Only way to fix it is to bend it.  I did one of them the other day and it worked well.  Sights are now centered

Yip,

Here's a good discussion on straightening barrels from 2008.... https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=302.msg3151#msg3151  Hope it helps.
