A Round Tuit
« on: March 21, 2022, 09:43:13 PM »
Guys,

I finally got a round tuit to build a pistol using a twist iron barrel.  The barrel came from an old twist iron shotgun barrel that I installed a liner and filed the outside to an octagon.  The barrel is now 10 inches long and 0.51 caliber smooth bore.  I also made another lined twist iron barrel that is in 0.54 rifled, but it is in the rough.  The process of lining an old twist iron or damascus barrel is shown on topic:

Hi Jim,
If you acid rust brown that barrel the pattern will really pop.

When I saw your pistol, I wet myself a little bit. Beautiful wood!

Dave - smartdog,

Wow! that barrel is splendid, certainly.  I wish mine would look that nice.  I only applied several coats of straight muriatic acid, which resulted in a well defined but only grey colored barrel.  How do I do an "acid rust brown"?  If, on my barrel, the dark grey twists would turn a vivid brown, that would be great.  I have viewed the online video from Midway USA where an old twist iron double barrel is finished.  The process to me looks rather expensive, complicated and even frightening!  I tried a gentle acid treatment followed by cold blue - that did not work.

Can you direct me to the acid rust brown process, I want to learn.

Long ago, and far away, I was a bit of a smart-a-- 15 year old.  My older sis owed me a couple favors, and always said she would "get a round to it."

Stealing a march from my Granddad, I sliced off about 10- 1/4" slices of a broom handle, sanded them, and printed "TUIT" on each one, and gave them to my sis, telling her that she no longer had an excuse.  Tempted to make a few more for both my friend and myself...
