Sling Lug Depth and Wall Thickness

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if there is a rile of thumb for how thick a barrel wall needs to be relative to the caliber of the barrel to install a sling lug? In other words, how deep does the dovetail for the sling stud need to be, and how much metal needs be be under the bottom of the dovetail? The sketch I have drawn up is a .54 rifle barrel with a .807" waist.

0.030 dovetail will leave you .100 wall which is quite safe. Dovetail plus solder. Plenty strong.

Barrel diameter-groove diameter/2 should give the wall thickness.
And there is always the question of “is the bore in the middle”?
.807-.564 (for .012 deep grooves)/2 =.1215 wall.
