Mike is 100% correct. I've had a couple of antique French guards here that I've used for new stuff, most recently for a big long club stock, and they all had very thin finials that were dished on the inside to essentially 'wrap around' the stock curvature. First time I saw one first-hand, after seeing all the modern commercial stuff for years with the thick, flat bottom finials, I was quite surprised to say the least.
