Cute little horn
« on: September 23, 2020, 12:19:15 AM »
Picked up this cute little day/bag/priming horn this past weekend from a picker acquaintance this past weekend for $5. He'd have wanted more for it but it is missing its base plug so he basically gave it too me. I was pretty happy. The base was held in with very small iron pins. The heads are still there but all but two of the shanks have rusted away which probably explains the loss of the base. Anyway, thought I'd share my good fortune.

Very cool little horn.  Are you going to replace the plug to get it back in its original form?

A heck of a cute little horn. Who would not want that? Thank you for showing up here with it. Bring it around again when you put a plug in it. Also, ask your picker where it came from. Could be a rifle standing in a a corner in that house.

Yes, I intend to replace the plug. I have a similar small horn that has a very slightly domed plug that I like. Will probably do something like that.

Honest as the day is long
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

I finally got around to working on restoring this horn. Think it turned out pretty well.

I cut out a plug from a piece of cherry that I had in the scrap box.

Installed and distressed the plug. There was a small amount of mouse damage on the lip of the horn at the top of the picture so I extended that into the plug.

Had to make some new rusty nails as I could only reuse some of the originals. I also carefully scraped off the little white paint flecks that were all over the horn.

Beautiful. I like the cherry wood.  Should be good for another hundred fifty years or so.

Mr. Wolfe. Good morning Sir. Ya'll took a pigs ear and turned it into a silk purse. Really nice pocket  horn and your restoration was spot on, great job. Thanks for sharing. Have a great week end. AJ.
