Pretty Basic Horn
« on: March 14, 2022, 03:14:32 PM »
Its about 12" around the outside curve and 10 tip-to-tip. The butt is Eastern Red Cedar, 2 1/4" wide held in by 7 wooden pegs. The tip is carved from the horn, color is some Brown dye and Brown shoe polish.

Being a fan of utilitarian type guns, I really like this horn.  Nice job.

Not every horn needs or should be elaborate in its decoration. Frankly I like this style of horn.

It's beautiful, Tim.  It has me re-thinking my choice of wood for a horn project of my own.  So, you stained the cedar with brown shoe dye?  That is exactly the color I was looking for in attempting to replicate an original horn.  I have some cedar which would work.

Just for discussion's sake, I would consider that horn most appropriate for right-side carry, but there seems to be a trend now for folks to select horns with a twist opposite of the direction I would prefer.  With that horn on the right side, the tip would be pointing up.  If it were carried on the left side, the horn would have to be rotated somewhat to fit the wearer's body, and the tip would then be more horizontal.

Thanks for showing that horn!  It is elegant.

The Cedar has a few coats of BLO, then buffed with a rag. After that the whole horn got a coat of Brown shoe polish and buffed again.
As for the twist, yes I would consider it a Right side carry, others may differ. If you carried it on the Left your elbow would be bumping into the butt. Where on the Right it curves around your back and out of the way of your elbow.

Truth be told, while we all like and want fancy horns, a man could go his whole life with a basic horn like this one and be happy.  I actually think the craftsmanship and finishes are well above "basic".  That is really nice work Tim.

Very clean elegant horn.  Probably nicer than 90% of the original horns that ever saw the woods.

I saw a order once where Washington asked for 3000 powder horns...I wonder what they looked like and who made them. Certainly they were a "Hodge-podge" of styles and sizes.
