Rifle by John Hood, Tennessee

This rifle was made by John Hood of Blount County, Tennessee.  Although I do have rifles in my collection that are much fancier and by more well-known makers, this one is one of my very favorites.  Note that the trigger guard is probably from the Kennedy factory in North Carolina.

I like it. I am kin to the Kennedy gunmakers on my mothers side. She is a Kennedy an the old gun factory grounds is a few county's north of us.

He's buried in the New Providence Cemetery in Maryville, Blount County, Tennessee.

Great rifle.  I see a lot of North Carolina influence, most notably the comb molding and the double line forestock molding that ends at the entry thimble.  Are there any ending volutes or scrolls there, that may have been rubbed down to be hard to see?

A Really pleasing rifle, to be sure. Thank you for posting the good photos here. They don't come much finer than this one.
