Long term storage

So what do you think is best for bore protection (inna bp rifle)??  Bear grease or rig or ?   I've been using rig.

How often do you check them??

Find anything weirder that the beetle nest that I found?? ::)

I would use Break Free CLP. It will dry to a gummy grease and is better than a grease IMO.
I don't use it for much of anything else because of this.
Rig is just grease. I suspect any gun grease or wheel bearing grease will work the same.

In Jerry Noble's book "Notes on Southern Longrifles", he pictures a .58 cal bear rifle that was found in an old cabin. The caption says the barrel was full of bear grease and was still in good condition. I have used Outers Gun Grease before. I usually check or shoot the guns within two months or so.  I think any name brand rust preventative is about as good as any other. RUST PREVENTATIVE not lubricant!

I've used RIG in the past and a moly axle grease. Both seem to work.  A lot depends on the area you live in - higher the humidity, the 'better' must be the storage rust preventitive. As I've before noted, WD40 works here with our relatively low humidity.

The corrosion protection that I have used for many many years is Boeshild T-9 Corrosion Protection and Waterproof lubrication. I have used this product on the Jaeger Rifle barrels I made and have had in storage for over 25 years and the barrels in the white have no rust or corrosion on them. It is the best long term storage rust protection that I have found. You can view their website at www.boeshield..com. The 12 oz aerosol spray can is the most convenience. The product is a little on the pricy side, but is well worth the cost for the added protection that the product provides.

Never send a boy to do a man's job. LPS-3 is a long-term marine preservative and lubricant. I strongly recommend it for your intended purpose. It will protect, in harsh environments for years.

Nope, not yet; but 'some' of my rifles have!

BTW - we shoot for hams at 1st Frontier Sunday ;D
