Silver buttplate

Here's an silver buttplate on Ebay with some interesting marks.  I have no interest in this item (other than curiosity).

It looks like it has been reworked for some reason. I have never seen a butt plate wrap around like that.

Somebody sure screwed up a nice buttplate. It should have some Sterling stamps on it somewhere.

Description

Period: 1774.
Style: George III.
Dimensions: 117mm x 110mm.
Weight: 92g / 2.96 troy oz.
Condition: Wear commensurate with age and use.
Marks: Bears the makers mark CF as well as full Birmingham hallmarks.
Notes: A stunning item, most likely a mount from an 18th Century sporting gun.

It doesn't appear to have ever been mounted. Strange place for stamps too.

I think it was. You can make out where the upper hole has been filled. The toe has the remnants of border engraving. I don't understand why it was reshaped the way it was. I have seen hallmarks on the toe of plates similar to this one on other buttplates. I'll try and find the images of them.

Probably all that remains of a wonderful English fowler. What a shame. A good silversmith could return it to what it was and it could then grace a new made gun. One similar to this turned up in the old Spanish Presidio fort here in San Diego. No other parts were ever found so far as I know and the whereabout of that butt plate is no longer known. There must be sone great stories here, but...
