For building a pistol with a small Siler lock (a Pecatonica "Dueling pistol")- should it have two or just one lock bolt?

flint or Percussion?  flint typically 2, un less you step up and make the front lockplate with the hook that secures the forward portion in the stock. The percussion just one lock bolt.

You can get by with one if you inlet is tight, almost all TN rifles have just one lock bolt and work just fine. I only put one in my TN flint rifle, Kibler only uses one in his SMRs.

Historically, all germanic flintlocks used two bolts

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Hi Bob,
I always ask what folks are trying to make before responding to these kinds of questions.  Of course, my brain goes immediately to historical styling often without considering the maker just wants a nice pistol.  So what are your objectives?  Mike Brooks is right if the gun will be Germanic in influence but if English, one lock bolt is fine.  However, the small Siler is not English, however you can make it so with some work.

Hi Dave- I don’t have any particular gun that I am modeling this pistol after (yet). It is a Pecatonica stock of plane Maple with a 9.5” straight 13/16” GM barrel and a small Siler lock. Although I will be building another Pecatonica “Kentucky “ pistol for someone soon, I thought I might like to make a pistol for myself just for fun. I like the lines of the stock, similar to what I have seen from Clay Smith’s kits and also MBS (the “Sparrow” gun I think they call it). It’s just the lock, stock and barrel coming, so I can decide on the furniture once I give this thing some thought.
