Question on JP Beck
« on: October 14, 2009, 10:56:10 PM »
Hi Guys, I've got a question for any of you  who are in the wonderful position of owning an actual  JP Beck.  I've been losing sleep about forend dimensions lately and I figured I'd try to go to the actual source. The question is on this gun:
 http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=2303.0

Does anybody know the width of the forend in relation to the barrel? It looks a bit fatter than normal out beyond the entry thimble in the pics. I'm wondering if it is the normal 1/8 inch wider than the barrel (1/16 on either side) or fatter than that. I have read that his guns were often a bit heavier in the butt stock, wrist and lock areas than his contemporaries but I'm not clear on the forend.

The reason I'm asking is that I recently built a Beck and I'm not completely satisfied with the forend shape so it has got me thinking of things I previously hadn't thunk about before.

Thanks,

Ken

Beck went .080" on a side. So how thick did you make yours?

Hi Tom,  Sorry I'm so late getting back to you. I hadn't realized you'd responded till just now.

I just went out and double checked and I've got .082 to .084 on either side depending on where I measure so I'm pretty close. I think the issue is the thickness of the web between the barrel and ramrod groove on this precarve. I just didn't get that nice rounded look to the forend. It's real close but not quite right.

I've only handled a few well built rifles and several of those have been at the Williamsburg Gun Shop in VA. Maybe they are slightly wider or the web is thinner. Either way, they have a real nice radius to the forends.

I've got to get to Dixons, Friendship, or the like to see a bunch of these to get a better mental picture of this detail.
