Hudson Valley Fowler #2 from Schoharie Old Stone Fort
« on: August 04, 2009, 09:48:35 PM »
Here is Hudson Valley fowler #2 from the Schoharie, NY Old Stone Fort.  This one is later, has an English lock, and a classic case of “musket grain disease” in the wrist.  It probably dates to 1760’s-1770’s.

It would be a beauty if it was restored.  Such a shame, that it won't be.

It is a real shame that it will not be restored, at least anytime soon (decades?). That is the major problem with public/museum ownership in my opinion. They usually just let a good gun molder away, or trade (or sell) them out the back door. I know of many good guns that fall (or have fallen) into all those categories.
This is a great gun, too. A bit later perhaps than the first one shown, as it has the 1760s-70s round faced, engraved colonial lock mechanism. The gun looks to be totally original and in 'as found' condition. The muzzle looks good and does not seem to have been cut back as many were.
Thank you for posting this old 'Dutch Boy' too; pure enjoyment!

I got to handle it yesterday. A couple more pix here. It has the deepest buttplate I’ve ever seen.

Certainly seen some time and use, but I like them just the way they are. I'm sure someone was very proud of them back in the day.

That's a great old gun.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?
