Newly finished Map and Schooner Horn (#17)
« on: June 26, 2022, 12:28:02 AM »
Here is Powder Horn #17 which I finished today. This handsome fellow measures 10" from spout tip to base plug (which is 3" high x 2" wide) with a steel forged strap staple. The map is of the upper Chesapeake Bay. The inside curve features the good Schooner MarySee and her stalwart crew. Lots of border work, which I think adds nice visuals.
(I will be posting in the For Sale forum as well)

Thank you Tim! I am looking forward for delivery of a book I bought (here) on engraved powder horns which will be a big help to me for ideas. Deciding on what to draw is the hardest part!

That is a very fine looking horn.
I live near the area shown on the map. I have to ask, what is your connection to the area or the schooner “Mary See”?
I also wonder what is the island shown? Jamestown?

Thank you Bob Hill and Nordecker, My connection to that area is just that I used to deer hunt in Cecil County (Maryland) on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake. I loved that place. The name 'MarySee' is derived from my two kids' names, Mary and Christian. The "See" is Christians first initial = "MarySee".
Not sure what that island was, I copied the map from an old, old woodcut map (1740's or so I think). It isn't identified but looks to be part of Elizabeth County.

Yeah, uhhh no.  There are a lot of map makers that try to saddle us with Cecil County, but nobody actually from the Shore counts Cecil.  Once you cross the C&D Canal you may as well be in B'more.   8)

Thanks Marcruger. I am glad you like it. I try to make my engraving visible so even the guy standing next to you can see the scrimshawing.
Osprey, I have absolutely no idea what your talking about.
