Cain Locks?

A friend of mine just bought a Homer Dangler built rifle, with a lock on it marked "Cain".  I have seen Cain triggers, but not locks.  Does anyone have any information on them?  Thanks in advance.   Steve

Possibly a lock assembled by Ed Cain in Williamstown, WV. He used to post on here some. His shop phone: 304-375-4794, Cains Outdoors, I think used to be Mt. State Muzzleloading.

More than likely the lock was built by Walter Cain.  I have two Siler flintlocks that Walter built.  Both locks function like a Swiss watch.  Ultra smooth operation.

On a Homer Dangler rifle, I'd bet it was assembled by Walter Cain (now deceased).  He assembled many Siler locks and as Dave said, they were done quite well.

I have had the pleasure of using one of his locks and some of his triggers. The man knew what he was doing. I have one of his single set pistol triggers now, great workmanship.

I knew Walter Cain and any time someone wanted a Germanic lock I sent Walter's business card to him.
He was a fine craftsman and I think he was a retired tool and die maker from General Motors.
He is deceased for some time now.

Thanks a lot guys! I looked at the lock myself this morning, and it is actually marked "W.C. Cain". So I would say it would have to be Walter Cain, and it was also a Siler.  You were also right about them being well built, and Very well tuned! Thanks again for all of your help.     Steve

Steve, you are very fortunate to have acquired a lock assembled by W. Cain. I had three of them when I first started making rifles and they are far more that a step ahead of the average well assembled Siler. I would say the man was gifted with an understanding geometry. If your lock is like mine, they come back easier at the end of the pull to full cock.

I used quite a few of them back in the day. You couldn't get a better Siler lock anywhere for any money.

Walter C. Cain Is deceased. He lived in Bay Village, Ohio. I have spent many hours with Walter before his passing. He was a life long machinist that retired from General Motors in Brook Park, Ohio. I worked at Fished Body in Elyria, Ohio as a machinist. Walter made single set triggers and assembled Siler locks. Walter had hardened fixtures to file his triggers to shape. He built several beautiful flintlock rifles. I shot black powder matches at Sandusky, Ohio Gun. Gun Club with Walter. Walter was one of a kind. He was a very talented individual. I cherish the time I spent with him. He has been missed. Jerry Rice

I asked Walter to send me some of his cards and when I got a request for a single set trigger or a German styled lock I would refer them to Walter Cain.Everything he made was made right and we were not competitors.
